Why I Put Quinoa In My Functional Dog Snacks (And Why It’s Not Just Filler)

Let’s get this out of the way first: quinoa is not “filler” — at least not the way I use it. You’ll never catch me bulking out Tobey Crafted treats with rice flour, wheat scraps, or weird meat paste you can’t pronounce. Nope. I want every bite your dog crunches to do something good.

So, why quinoa? Simple: it’s real food, just like you’d cook for yourself. I use whole cooked quinoa — yes, I actually cook it first — because it’s an ancient seed (not a true grain!) that’s gentle on sensitive tummies but hearty enough to add healthy bulk. It’s naturally packed with plant protein, a touch of fiber, and minerals dogs actually benefit from.

When I chill it and cut it into my crunchy tiles, those tiny seeds give a fun, crumbly  texture dogs adore — not that weird, gummy chew some treats have. And no, I don’t worry about quinoa getting stuck in their teeth any more than a crumb from their dinner would. Plus, unlike some grains, cooked quinoa is easy to digest and won’t flare up most food allergies.

Dogs love it, my dog Tobey thrives on it, and you can feel good knowing you’re feeding them something clean and honest — not sawdust masquerading as nutrition.

Around here, if it doesn’t help, it doesn’t go in. That’s my promise.
